Biography | Artist Statement | Resumé

Helene Hirmes has been involved in the arts all her life. She has painted in oils and acrylics, and worked in lithography, weaving, batik and fabric construction. In 1984 she began sculpting in clay, doing primarily the human face and figure. Her figures are fluid and remarkably lifelike, with a great deal of attention to detail. Being practical as well as creative, most of her sculpture is sized to enhance the decor of the average room. She calls her pieces "table friendly."

She spent two years working with the feminist artist Judy Chicago executing, with six other artists, the needlepoint tapestry called "Birth Trinity" which has been exhibited in museums and other facilities throughout the country. It is now permanently displayed at the Ms. Foundation, NYC.

The artists she has trained with are Peter Rubino, Lincoln Fox, Judith Weller, Howard Kadish, Janice Mauro, and Jack Dowd.
